Effects of Oral Health Education on Oral Health Promotion of Patients with Chronic Renal Failure

Abstract
Objective: This study was to examine the effect of oral health education on the oral health promotion of patients with chronic renal failure.

Methods: The subjects in this study were 79 patients with chronic renal failure, who were randomly divided into two groups. The control group received no education, and the expeimental group received 2 kinds of education, toothbrushing (Group¥°) or toothbrushing and water flosser (Group¥±). Their oral health behavior, oral symptoms were tested to analyze whether they underwent any changes in two weeks and four weeks after they received education, and PHP Index (Patient Hygiene Performance Index) was additionally conducted.

Results: As for oral health behavior, after the education toothbrushing group and the toothbrushing/water flosser group showed more significant including toothbrushing frequency, pre-bedtime toothbrushing, and toothbrushing time. In terms of oral symptoms, after the education toothbrushing/water flosser group showed significant improvement in two and four weeks later in symptoms of toothache, gingival bleeding, pain halitosis or xerostomia. In terms of PHP Index, the toothbrushing/water flosser group showed the best improvement, and the toothbrushing group also showed some improvement. The control group underwent no change.

Conclusion: Therefore sustained oral health care through the right toothbrushing and the use of water flosser is expected to make a contribution to the improvement of the oral hygiene and patients with chronic renal failure and to the promotion of their oral health
